From Dreamer to Achiever: My Unconventional Path to Studying French in France

Bonjour, my lovely readers! Today, I’m taking you back to the early days of my French journey, a time filled with dreams of exploring the enchanting land of France. It all began at Alliance Française de Delhi, where my heart was set on mastering the language of love. Amongst the eager French learners, I had a memorable chat with a classmate that would unknowingly set the course for an extraordinary adventure. Let me take you back to that moment when dreams seemed to collide, and destiny took over.

In the Halls of Alliance Française de Delhi

The hallways of Alliance Française were buzzing with excitement as we, the budding French enthusiasts, gathered for our classes. I remember the anticipation, the joy, and the dreams that sparkled in every eye. France, with its rich culture, captivating landmarks, and delicious cuisine, beckoned us like a distant fairy tale waiting to come alive.

One fine afternoon, during a break, I found myself engaged in a conversation with my dear classmate, Riya. The topic, of course, was France. As we exchanged our fantasies about studying in France, strolling along the Seine, savoring crêpes at a quaint crêperie in Bretagne, and visiting the iconic Mont Saint Michel, Riya brought up an important concern.

“Studying in France would be a dream come true,” she said wistfully, “but it’s so expensive, and studying there will require a scholarship. I’ll go to France only if I manage to secure one.”

While I understood her reservations, something within me stirred with determination. “You know what, Riya,” I replied, “I believe in chasing dreams without limitations. I’ll go to France too, and I don’t need a regular scholarship. I’ll create my own scholarship!”

At that moment, I hadn’t fully understood the magnitude of my words. I was simply fueled by passion and an unshakeable desire to make my dreams come true.

Little did I know that my seemingly audacious statement held a touch of magic. As I immersed myself in learning French and expanding my knowledge of the country’s rich heritage, I became more resolute than ever before. While Riya diligently sought scholarships, I started exploring alternative paths that could lead me to the land I yearned to tread.

Fast forward a few months, and I found myself ready to take the leap. My heart was set on the DUEF courses in France, and after careful research, I chose CIREFE, University of Rennes II, to embark on my linguistic adventure.

My First Semester on My Own

But the question remained: How would I fund this pursuit of my dreams? As a student coming from an underprivileged background, my family’s income qualified for the BPL card (Below Poverty Limit card), indicating that we did not have sufficient financial resources. Determined to make my dreams come true, I worked as a private tutor, devoting myself to helping others while steadily saving every penny. With hard work and commitment, I earned five scholarships at Alliance Française de Delhi which along with my tutoring job helped me a lot to gather enough funds to cover the expenses of my first semester, or so I thought.

Little did I know that the journey ahead would be more financially demanding than anticipated. Despite my best efforts, the weight of my aspirations left me with a daunting 70,000 INR credit card debt at the end of the course. However, even in my darkest moments, a ray of hope shone through. My sister came to my aid, selflessly lending me 1 lakh INR (100,000 rs or 1100 euros), which I was fortunate enough to repay within a few months.

My Self-Created Scholarship

As the first semester unfolded, I continued to pour my heart and soul into my studies and activities at CIREFE. Participating in various events, winning a photography competition, and actively engaging in the theater group, I built a remarkable portfolio of achievements. But as the second semester approached, I faced a financial dilemma once again.

Undeterred, I recalled my bold declaration at Alliance Française – that I would create my own scholarship. With laptop on my lap, I wrote a heartfelt email to the director of CIREFE, detailing my academic accomplishments and my financial circumstances. I shared my determination and passion for studying French language in France, hoping that my earnest words would be heard.

The Universe Conspires

Days turned into weeks, and patience was both my ally and my foe. But just as my resolve began to waver, an email notification brought tears of joy to my eyes. The director had granted me an exoneration of 950 euros for the upcoming semester! My heart soared, and I knew that the universe had conspired in my favor.

The Journey Continues

Armed with my self-created scholarship and the exoneration, I embarked on a life-changing adventure to study French in France. CIREFE welcomed me with open arms, and the experiences that followed were nothing short of magical. From exploring the historic landmarks to savoring the delectable cuisine, every moment felt like a cherished dream.

My dear readers, as I reflect on that fateful conversation at Alliance Française, I’m filled with gratitude for the words I spoke without fully understanding their significance. Today, as I continue my master’s studies at Paris Saclay and gonna start a part-time job at France Éducation International, I know that dreams are worth pursuing, no matter the obstacles. Sometimes, all it takes is a little bit of magic – the magic of determination and self-belief.

So, I encourage you all to dream, to chase those dreams with passion, and to create your own magic in the journey of life. As for me, I’ll forever cherish the memory of that day at Alliance Française when I unknowingly set in motion a remarkable adventure to study French in the captivating land of France.

If You Want to Follow My Journey to learn French at CIREFE

For those of you who aspire to study French in France and are looking for French courses, I recommend considering DUEF courses.

DUEF stands for “Diplôme d’Université d’Études Françaises,” which translates to “University Diploma in French Studies” in English. It is a language proficiency program designed for international students who wish to study French in France and improve their language skills. The DUEF courses are offered by various universities and language centers across France.

One of the significant advantages of DUEF courses is that they offer a more cost-effective option (800 euros in 2019 now 980 euros per semester at CIREFE) compared to other language programs, such as those offered by private language schools or AF institutes. Additionally, DUEF courses often provide longer-term student visas, which allow international students to stay in France for an extended period and fully immerse themselves in French culture and society.

“Other famous institutes in France (who shall remain nameless because I don’t need a legal problem) charge 1,400 euros for a 72-hour course without including DELF DALF certification. In contrast, at CIREFE, you can enroll in a 260-hour DUEF course for only 980 euros, and an additional 90 euros for CVEC (Contribution Vie Étudiante et de Campus). This makes the DUEF course at CIREFE not only more comprehensive but also significantly more affordable than the shorter courses offered at other institutes.”

With the added benefit of being cheaper than other private institutions, DUEF courses still hold the same recognition as DELF and DALF certificates. In my own experience, my DUEF certification opened doors for exciting opportunities, such as landing a job at Amazon and gaining admission to prestigious institutions like Paris Saclay, all without needing any DELF or DALF certificates.

Remember, the key to realizing your dreams lies in your determination and constant belief in yourself. So, take the leap, pursue your passions, and create your own extraordinary journey in the captivating land of France.

Bon voyage to all the dreamers out there, for dreams do come true!

Hey This is the Indian Supertramp, and I love to travel in all directions. I have been in love with travel for a few years now and have got to 13 countries so far. I could do much better, but as an Indian and a son, I have been a bit busy helping the family simultaneously. I started travelling solo in 2017, and it's been 6 years that finally, I am going to take a big risk and live the life I once dreamt. Am I afraid? Sure, I am hell afraid, but Rihtik Roshan once said: Darr k agey jeet hai. I hope this platform gives you inspiration (and practical advice) to go on a pursuit of your own adventures. I have experienced that chasing adventures and having new experiences is a unique education that you don't get in school or college, so come out of that shell, break the 9-5 cliché and make your life worth remembering.
